Align native sequence iterator state and lifecycle - #9701
Align concrete sequence iterator state and lifecycle with CPython 3.15 in 437 changed production Rust lines across nine files.
Share signed cursor, owner retention, length hints, state validation and reduction snapshots through a native iterator helper. Concrete reads remain atomic without holding locks across Python allocation or owner release.
Preserve the distinct list, reverse-list, immutable sequence and bytearray negative-state rules, including reversible list states and irreversible bytearray exhaustion.
Validate strict integer state and native ssize overflow even after exhaustion. Share the borrowed conversion helper with the generic iterator companion in Align builtin iterator controls and callback lifetimes #9699, rather than duplicating conversion logic.
Correct empty reverse-list initialization, clamping and live length hints. Keep list/tuple fast paths and normal iteration on the same implementation.
Move bytes, bytearray and string result allocation outside iterator/storage locks, keep rejected string states from invalidating cached offsets, and register the retained owners for cyclic traversal.
The separate memoryview lifecycle changes extend #9692, which already owns memory iterator constructor validation. This PR does not duplicate that work. Existing generic sequence, dictionary/set, range and other PositionIterInternal consumers remain unchanged. No Python, Lib, tests, expected-failure markers or workflows changed.
60,141 bounded CPython/source-model checks across 1,500 randomized state traces, plus independent strict-state, finalizer, traversal and allocation-order reference probes. These establish reference behavior and review the source translation; they are not RustPython runtime tests.
Focused host-env/VM/stdlib threading cargo check and normal all-targets Clippy passed. Four diagnostics match the unchanged main baseline exactly: one POSIX needless-collect and three ElementTree lints. No warnings were suppressed; strict -D warnings remains blocked by that baseline.
Formatting, diff checks and normal commit hooks passed.
Native RustPython execution was not performed. Full workspace/C-API suites and cross-platform runtime tests remain unrun. Hosted CI is required, and no runtime expected failure is claimed resolved. Existing cross-thread scheduling and allocation-timing differences outside these iterator controls remain outside scope.
AI-assisted implementation and independent review using OpenAI Codex; model version is not exposed.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved iteration across lists, tuples, strings, bytes, and bytearrays, including more consistent iterator state restoration and length reporting.
Invalid iterator state values now produce clearer type or overflow errors.
Built-in bytearray, bytes, list, string, and tuple iterators now use NativeSequenceIter for cursor state and iterator operations. The shared implementation handles advancement, length hints, state restoration, and reduction, with iterator-kind-specific cursor behavior.

Summary
Native iterator state and operations crates/vm/src/builtins/native_iter.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/mod.rs, crates/vm/src/function/number.rs, crates/vm/src/function/mod.rs
Adds native iterator kinds and synchronized state. Adds cursor advancement, length hints, state restoration, and reduction. Adds int_as_ssize for integer state conversion.
Bytes and tuple iterators crates/vm/src/builtins/bytes.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/tuple.rs
Bytes and tuple iterators use the native iterator for construction, advancement, length hints, state restoration, and reduction.
String iterator and character offsets crates/vm/src/builtins/str.rs
String iteration stores a byte offset alongside its string and uses the native cursor. After state restoration, it derives the byte offset from the character index.
Forward and reverse list iterators crates/vm/src/builtins/list.rs
Forward and reverse list iterators use the native iterator. Reverse iteration initializes its cursor at the final list index.
RustPython/RustPython#9691: Its list serialization behavior uses list-iterator cursor and exhaustion behavior changed here.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to d893b
The iterator changes have no established merge-blocking defect. The string restoration performance limitation is unchanged; merge remains subject to normal CI checks.

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 11 functions across 9 files.

Keep the str iterator restore scan out of the iterator lock, or use the cached index lookup.
After __setstate__ sets the byte offset sentinel, the next call scans from the start of the string with code_point_indices().nth(index). It does this while holding the NativeSequenceIter mutex. Restoring and consuming at increasing positions therefore costs O(n²) code point visits and blocks other users of the iterator during each scan. The StrData::char_index_to_byte index cache could replace the scan, but that cache builds a table on first use, so the lock and build cost must be handled together.

Update the string iterator restore path after the byte-offset sentinel so
repeated restores do not rescan from the start while holding the
NativeSequenceIter mutex. Move the scan outside the lock or use
StrData::char_index_to_byte, ensuring any cache initialization is handled
without holding the iterator lock; preserve the restored position and avoid
repeated O(n) scans.
