Host-environment fixes and additions, one commit each:

  • locale: the host grouping reader stopped before CHAR_MAX, so a grouping of "\x7f" came out empty. It now keeps CHAR_MAX. locale.localeconv() and the 'n' format add the trailing 0 only when the list does not already end in CHAR_MAX. On macOS, bg_BG.CP1251 mon_grouping was [] and is now [127], the same as CPython.
  • socket: adds if_nameindex_bytes and if_indextoname_bytes, which return interface names without a lossy UTF-8 conversion. The existing String functions now call them.
  • posix: adds sendfile_no_offset on Linux, which sends from the file's current offset.
  • cert_store (Windows): adds enum_certificates_local_machine and enum_crls_local_machine, which read a read-only CERT_SYSTEM_STORE_LOCAL_MACHINE store, including each entry's encoding and enhanced key usage.
  • winsound (Windows): copies a Memory source into u16-aligned storage before calling PlaySoundW, so an empty slice no longer passes a dangling pointer. SND_MEMORY is now rejected only for a Name source.
  • wmi (Windows): adds exec_query_wide, which takes and returns UTF-16 without conversion. exec_query now calls it.

Testing:

  • cargo test -p rustpython-host_env passes, including a new copy_grouping test.
  • cargo clippy -p rustpython-host_env --lib passes for x86_64-pc-windows-msvc and x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu.
  • test_locale, test__locale, test_format and the interface-name tests in test_socket pass.
  • The localeconv() grouping values match CPython for every locale in /usr/share/locale on macOS.

Rebase verification (2026-11-07)

Rebased onto ea5fbcc00. Kept both the new locale snapshot implementation and the grouping regression test, and adapted the interface-name readers to propagate errors from the now-fallible fsdecode API.

  • Workspace tests: 1,519 passed, 20 ignored; C-API tests: 149 passed, 2 ignored.
  • Workspace/all-targets clippy and configured commit hooks passed.
  • Debug-interpreter test__locale and test_format passed. Three locale-alias errors and two interface-enumeration EPERM errors reproduced with system CPython in this environment.
  • Release-mode and Windows validation were not rerun during this rebase.

Rebase, conflict resolution, API adaptation, and verification assisted by Codex (gpt-6.1-sol).

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

This change adds local-machine certificate and CRL enumeration, byte-preserving interface-name APIs, a wide WMI query API, and a Linux sendfile wrapper. It also updates sound playback memory handling and locale grouping behavior.

Changes: Local-machine certificate stores

Layer / File(s) Summary
Store setup and certificate usage
crates/host_env/src/cert_store.rs
Helpers open read-only local-machine stores, classify encodings, and retrieve enhanced key usages.
Certificate and CRL enumeration
crates/host_env/src/cert_store.rs
New APIs return DER and encoding data for certificates and CRLs. Certificate entries include selected usage data. Store-close errors take precedence over enumeration results.

Locale grouping behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Grouping patterns and conversion
crates/common/src/format.rs, crates/host_env/src/locale.rs, crates/stdlib/src/locale.rs, crates/vm/src/format.rs
Grouping conversion preserves CHAR_MAX and treats it as the end of grouping. Locale consumers append a terminating zero only when the grouping does not end with CHAR_MAX. Tests cover the grouping behavior.

Linux sendfile wrapper

Layer / File(s) Summary
Current-position sendfile
crates/host_env/src/posix.rs
The Linux-only wrapper sends up to the requested byte count from the input descriptor’s current position and returns the count or an I/O error.

Byte-preserving interface names

Layer / File(s) Summary
Byte and string interface-name APIs
crates/host_env/src/socket.rs, crates/stdlib/src/socket.rs
New host APIs return interface names as bytes. Existing host string APIs use lossy UTF-8 decoding; non-Windows runtime socket functions use filesystem decoding.

Sound playback memory handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Source validation and memory handling
crates/host_env/src/winsound.rs
SND_MEMORY is rejected for named sources but permitted for Stop. Empty memory sources use a zeroed static buffer.

Wide WMI query results

Layer / File(s) Summary
Wide query execution and string conversion
crates/host_env/src/wmi.rs
The new wide-query API returns raw UTF-16 units. The existing string API delegates to it and converts the result lossily.

Make the Unix socket.if_nameindex() consumer keep non-UTF-8 interface names.

On Unix, crates/stdlib/src/socket.rs calls the String variant of if_nameindex. That variant applies String::from_utf8_lossy, so an interface name with an invalid UTF-8 byte returns U+FFFD. CPython decodes these names with PyUnicode_DecodeFSDefault. The new if_nameindex_bytes has no caller yet.

Suggested direction

Build the Python name from the bytes in if_nameindex_bytes() with filesystem-encoding decoding, as CPython does. Keep the String wrapper for other callers. Confirm the RustPython string API supports this decoding before changing the consumer.

Add a test for a CHAR_MAX-terminated grouping at the localeconv() and 'n' format layers.

The new test calls only the host copy_grouping helper. The stdlib localeconv() path and the vm 'n' format path each apply their own trailing-0 logic. No test checks either path with a CHAR_MAX terminator, so a regression in either would not fail the suite.

Avoid copying the whole SND_MEMORY buffer on every call.

The memory path copies the entire sound into a new Vec<u16> before each synchronous PlaySoundW call. Peak memory during playback becomes about twice the sound size. If that allocation fails, Rust's default allocation-failure handler aborts the process. The Microsoft documentation says PlaySound plays a sound only when it fits into available memory. The copy makes that limit effectively half as large.

Stop locale grouping at a CHAR_MAX entry instead of using it as a group width.

get_locale_info now keeps a trailing CHAR_MAX in LocaleInfo.grouping. insert_locale_grouping reads every nonzero entry as a group width, so CHAR_MAX (127 on signed-char platforms) becomes a 127-digit group. For a locale whose numeric grouping is only CHAR_MAX and whose thousands separator is nonempty, 'n' formatting of an integer longer than 127 digits inserts separators. Before this change that case produced no grouping. Treat a CHAR_MAX entry as the end of grouping, as CPython does.

P2 Badge Teach the number formatter to stop at CHAR_MAX

For a numeric locale with grouping [CHAR_MAX] and a nonempty thousands separator, preserving the marker here changes 'n' formatting from ungrouped to groups of CHAR_MAX digits. insert_locale_grouping in crates/common/src/format.rs only recognizes 0 and treats all other entries as widths, so on signed-char platforms format(10**127, 'n') now inserts a separator where the parent commit correctly inserted none. Update that consumer to honor CHAR_MAX as a stop marker, including as the first entry; suppressing the trailing zero alone does not preserve its semantics.

Filesystem-encode names before reverse lookup.

If an interface name contains a non-UTF-8 byte, the new output paths return a surrogate-escaped string. FsPath::to_cstring uses its internal string bytes instead of filesystem encoding, so if_nametoindex(if_indextoname(index)) fails for that interface. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Use filesystem encoding before constructing the C string. Add a round-trip test with a non-UTF-8 interface name.

The host grouping reader stopped before CHAR_MAX, so a grouping of
"\x7f" read as empty and localeconv() reported []. It now keeps
CHAR_MAX as the last element, and localeconv() and the 'n' format
append the 0 terminator only when the list does not already end in
CHAR_MAX.
