The command ignored -Xmx, so every array could grow to the fixed 1 GB cap. OpenJDK tests that run with a small heap to reach an OutOfMemoryError quickly (for example java/beans/Introspector/Test8027905.java, -Xmx16m, which doubles an int[] until it fails) allocated and zero-filled hundreds of MB first: 35 s on a small board and over 600 s on a busy CI runner, where it timed out in #12's first full run.
-Xmx<n>[k|m|g] now sets MAX_HEAP, which caps one allocation and is what Runtime.maxMemory() and the memory MXBean report, up to the existing 1 GB. As on x64 HotSpot, the size rounds up to 2 MB steps, -Xmx0 is invalid and anything under 2 MB is too small to start. The total of live objects is still not counted, so a program that fills the heap with many small arrays does not fail as early as on HotSpot; docs/node.md says so.
A new test runs a program under -Xmx16m through the command and compares it with HotSpot: a 32 MB array fails, a 4 MB one succeeds, and -Xmx17m reports x64 HotSpot's 18874368.
Verified: the new test, Test8027905 (now seconds), pnpm typecheck. #12 brings the OpenJDK suite into PR CI; it will run with this change once both are in.

New Features
The command-line interface now supports -Xmx values with k, m, or g suffixes. Values are rounded up to 2 MiB increments, capped at 1 GiB, and values below 2 MiB are rejected.
The configured maximum is reported by Runtime.maxMemory() and limits the size of individual arrays; it does not represent a limit on total live objects.
Documentation
Updated the Node command-line documentation with -Xmx behavior and limits.
The Node CLI now accepts -Xmx values, rounds accepted sizes to 2 MiB steps, and applies a maximum array size capped at 1 GiB. The documentation describes the option, and a test compares its behavior with HotSpot.

The runtime exposes a configurable maximum array size. The Node CLI parses -Xmx values, rejects values below 2 MiB, rounds accepted values up to a 2 MiB multiple, and applies the limit. Documentation and tests describe and check this behavior.
Project516/java-web#4: Adds the Node entry point and CLI that this change extends with -Xmx handling.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 49025
The new -Xmx option leaves some reported memory values inconsistent with the configured limit. Memory-management queries can also throw when the limit is low, and malformed values are silently ignored. Fix these before merge, though normal runs without -Xmx are unaffected.

The PR adds support for the -Xmx flag to cap the maximum array size and Runtime.maxMemory() value, fixing a timeout in OpenJDK test Test8027905. A new test verifies that a 32 MB array fails and a 4 MB array succeeds under -Xmx16m, matching HotSpot behavior. The implementation parses the size suffix (k/m/g), caps at 1 GB, and updates documentation.

This PR adds support for the -Xmx flag to cap the maximum heap size, which limits individual array allocations and sets the value reported by Runtime.maxMemory(). The implementation parses -Xmx with k/m/g suffixes (or bare bytes), validates a 2 MB minimum matching x64 HotSpot, rounds up to 2 MB steps, and caps at 1 GB. A new test verifies the behavior against HotSpot: a 32 MB array fails, a 4 MB array succeeds, and -Xmx17m reports 18874368 bytes.

The PR adds -Xmx support to the java-web command, allowing the maximum heap size to be set (capped at 1 GB, rounded up to 2 MB steps, minimum 2 MB). The implementation parses the flag in src/node.ts, validates and rounds the value, then calls setMaxHeap in src/runtime.ts which updates the mutable MAX_HEAP used for array allocation limits and Runtime.maxMemory(). A new test verifies the behavior matches x64 HotSpot for -Xmx17m (18874368 bytes). The previously discussed minimum-heap validation is now present in the code.

The PR adds support for the -Xmx flag to cap the maximum heap size (and thus the largest array allocation) at up to 1 GB, rounded up to 2 MB steps with a 2 MB minimum, matching x64 HotSpot behavior. The change threads the value through MAX_HEAP in runtime.ts, updates Runtime.maxMemory(), freeMemory(), totalMemory(), and the memory MXBean to respect the cap, and adds a test that verifies the rounding and allocation behavior against HotSpot.
