Boot (initPhase1 to initPhase3) is most of startup: about 1.8 s of a 1.9 s hello world, mostly the module system scanning the exploded image. This PR saves the VM as it is right after boot and starts later runs from that snapshot (src/snapshot.ts).

What a snapshot holds: the Java heap (with identity hashes and monitors), class init states and statics, interned strings, module and package tables, the VM's file state, and the two system threads. No socket is open after boot; a VM with one open is not saved. Classes are parsed again from the image in the same load order. The Reference Handler and Common-Cleaner threads restore as spurious wakeups, which the JDK already handles.

The key covers everything boot reads: the build (a digest of the JDK image plus the runtime sources, or the build ID in dist/; a --jdk image adds its own digest), the boot module set, the VM and platform properties, the working directory, -D options, assertions, --enable-preview and the heap limit. Boot does not read sun.java.command, so with snapshots on the VM boots with an empty one and sets the real value after boot or restore. Different main classes and arguments share a snapshot, and a snapshot never holds a run's arguments. Options that make boot load app classes (java.system.class.loader, jdk.module.path, upgrade and patch paths) turn snapshots off.

Where snapshots live:

  • Node: ~/.cache/java-web/snapshots ($XDG_CACHE_HOME is used when set). A key's first boot leaves a marker and its second boot saves the snapshot, so one-off runs write nothing large. The cache keeps the 16 most recently used snapshots. JAVA_WEB_SNAPSHOT_DIR moves it, an empty value turns it off, and the snapshotDir option does the same from code.
  • Browser: in memory for the page, plus the 4 most recent in a separate IndexedDB database (java-web-snapshots). It is separate so that pages already open on the files database do not block it.

Saving is best effort: a write that fails leaves the run as it was. Class bytes kept for the snapshot are dropped once it is saved or restored. A snapshot that fails to restore is deleted, a message goes to stderr, and the VM boots normally.

Also fixed: an internal VM error on the main thread left the process idle forever. It now exits with status 1.

Measured on the same machine:

Case Before After
Node hello world (dist/node.js) 2.34 s 0.87 s
Browser, second run in a page 2.29 s 0.29 s
Browser, first run after a reload 2.29 s 0.58 s
Browser self-test, library mode 2.18 s 0.56 s
Browser self-test, Web Worker 1.90 s 0.50 s

The first run with a new key costs nothing measurable: 2.37 s against 2.34 s with snapshots off.

Checks:

  • test/snapshot.test.ts: a restored run matches HotSpot, and the snapshot file does not contain the run's arguments (arguments, sun.java.command, a system property, a weak reference the Reference Handler enqueues after System.gc, a worker thread). It also covers that other properties and library mode get their own snapshots, that a failed save changes nothing, that a corrupt snapshot falls back to boot and is replaced, and that jdk.module.path turns snapshots off.
  • pnpm test passes (136 tests) three times in a row on one empty cache, so later passes run from snapshots.
  • The browser self-test passes on a first and a second page load.
  • pnpm jdk writes the same image.sha256 on a rebuild.

Noticed, not fixed:

  • The OpenJDK suite in CI barely benefits: each test has its own working directory and -D options, so keys rarely repeat.
  • A prebuilt snapshot in the package is not possible. Boot stores the class path in the app class loader, so the snapshot depends on it.
  • Cold code is unchanged: the first javac compile in the browser still takes about 8 s.

Browser startup may fail rather than fall back to a normal boot when removal of a corrupt snapshot fails. Fixing that narrow failure path and the restore test’s file-identity check is advisable; otherwise the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

This PR adds boot snapshots to skip JDK boot on repeated starts, saving ~1.8s. It introduces snapshot.ts for VM state serialization, integrates with Node (filesystem cache) and browser (IndexedDB), and modifies JVM startup to restore or boot. A critical bug in vmProperties returns keys then values instead of interleaved key/value pairs, breaking snapshot keys and the vmProperties native. The snapshot key also uses a constant MAX_HEAP instead of the actual heap limit, contrary to the PR description.

Not approved: the diff of test/snapshot.test.ts, test/snapshot/Boot.java was too large to read.

On the two points in the review body:

  • vmProperties returns interleaved pairs. [...props] on a Map gives [[k1, v1], [k2, v2], ...], and .flat() makes that [k1, v1, k2, v2, ...], the layout the VM.vmProperties native has always returned. The snapshot key code uses the same layout (i % 2 === 0 for keys).
  • MAX_HEAP is the actual limit. It is an export let in src/runtime.ts that setMaxHeap (-Xmx) assigns. ES module imports are live bindings, so snapshotKey reads the value set for this run, not the initial one.

The two test files the review skipped are being reviewed separately, and findings will be posted here.

A separate review covered the two files the bot skipped (test/snapshot.test.ts, test/snapshot/Boot.java). It found two real issues, both fixed in 2194279:

  • The restore checks only looked at the snapshot's mtime. A boot that failed to load and then saved a new snapshot would also set it, so a restore was not proven. The tests now record the file's inode, and require that the load touched the same file rather than renaming a new one over it.
  • Boot.java waited on the reference queue in an unbounded System.gc() loop, so a missing enqueue would hang the test instead of failing it. The loop is now bounded. It also prints whether the queue returned the reference (r == w). It used to print whether the referent was cleared, which happens at GC even without the Reference Handler that the test is meant to check.

node --test test/snapshot.test.ts passes (6 tests), and so does pnpm typecheck.

This PR adds boot snapshots to skip JDK boot on subsequent runs, saving 1.5s startup. It introduces src/snapshot.ts with Encoder/Decoder for VM state, integrates with JVM via snapshots option, adds Node cache (/.cache/java-web/snapshots, 16 MRU) and browser cache (IndexedDB, 4 MRU), and fixes a VM error hang by exiting with status 1. The snapshot key covers build ID, boot modules, platform/VM properties, assertions, preview flag, and heap limit. Saving is best-effort; corrupt snapshots fall back to boot.

This PR adds boot snapshots to skip JDK boot on repeated starts, saving ~1.8s of a 1.9s hello world. The snapshot captures the heap, class states, interned strings, module tables, and system threads after initPhase3. Keys include build ID, module set, properties, working directory, and VM options. Snapshots are stored in ~/.cache/java-web/snapshots (Node, 16 MRU) and IndexedDB (browser, 4 MRU). Saving is best-effort; failed restores fall back to normal boot. A critical bug in jvm.ts run() resolves the outer promise with this.exited (a Promise) instead of the exit code, breaking the retry-on-restore-failure logic. A discrepancy exists where snapshot.ts throws on open sockets despite the PR claiming socket state is saved.

Not approved: the diff of types/node.d.ts, test/snapshot.test.ts, test/snapshot/Boot.java was too large to read.

The dev-mode buildId fallback assumes import.meta.url points into the src/ directory. This works with tsx but breaks if run from a different structure (e.g., a bundled test). Since this only affects development and dist/node.js has JAVA_WEB_BUILD defined, document the constraint or use a more robust source-root detection.

Same point as the earlier thread on this function (resolved there). This fallback only runs as src/node.ts. Any bundle is built by scripts/build-web.ts, which defines JAVA_WEB_BUILD.

The concern still stands. The buildId fallback at lines 260-263 in src/node.ts continues to assume import.meta.url points into a src/ directory containing .ts files. The author's reply asserts this only runs as src/node.ts and that bundles define JAVA_WEB_BUILD, but this doesn't address:

  1. Tests or tooling that might run the source from a different layout (e.g., copied to a temp dir, bundled by a test harness)
  2. The constraint is not documented in the code
  3. No more robust source-root detection was added (e.g., walking up to find package.json or a known marker file)

Either document the assumption explicitly in a comment, or make the fallback resilient to different source layouts.

Added a comment at the fallback saying it runs as src/node.ts beside the VM sources. It will be in the next push. Walking up to package.json would not help: the digest must cover the VM sources, and only this layout has them.

The author's last comment says a comment was added "at the fallback saying it runs as src/node.ts beside the VM sources" and "will be in the next push." The current head diff (lines 260-263 of src/node.ts) shows no such comment, the fallback still reads import.meta.url and walks src/ for .ts files without any documentation of the layout assumption. Since the documenting comment is not yet in the code at head, the concern remains.

The comment is now in the head (5db2fe1, part of 0756dcd): // unbundled, this file runs as src/node.ts, next to the rest of the VM's sources, directly above the fallback.

On the review body: resolve(this.exited) settles with the exit code, and the retry runs through the rejection path (details on the thread). On sockets, the description was loose. The socket table is always empty after boot, and dumpVM refuses to save a VM with an open socket. The description now says that. types/node.d.ts adds only the snapshotDir option. The two test files the bot skipped were reviewed separately (see the comment above).

Keep a dropped snapshot out of the retry path.

drop removes only the memory entry before the IndexedDB delete. Its errors are discarded. If the delete fails after the database opens, the corrupt image remains in IndexedDB. The retry in retried then calls load, which misses memory and reads the same image from IndexedDB. The restore fails again, and the second start() has no catch, so the run rejects instead of booting normally. The run and library starts share snapshotCache, so both paths are affected. Track dropped keys in the cache so load skips them until a new image is saved.

them, clear the marker in save, and mark the key in drop while preserving the
existing memory and IndexedDB operations.

The browser snapshot cache already clones snapshot images.

src/browser/worker.ts clones images before storing them in memory and before returning them for restoration. The reported typed-array aliasing path does not exist.

On the outside-diff finding in src/browser/worker.ts: fixed in 0756dcd. The cache now keeps a set of dropped keys. load returns null for them until save stores a new image under that key. Beyond a failed delete, this also covers the retry reading the image before the async IndexedDB delete commits. Node deletes the file synchronously before the retry, so it needs no change.

This PR adds boot snapshot functionality to speed up VM startup by saving the VM state after initial boot and restoring it on subsequent runs with the same key. The core new file is src/snapshot.ts (441 lines), with modifications to src/jvm.ts, src/node.ts, src/browser/worker.ts, and src/browser/idb.ts to integrate snapshot support. Measured improvements show ~3x speedup on subsequent runs.

Other notes

  • src/jvm.ts: CRITICAL BUG: this.exited is a Promise, so resolve(this.exited) resolves the outer promise to a Promise instead of the number. This means vm.run() returns Promise<Promise> instead of Promise. The retried wrapper in node.ts and worker.ts expects vm.run() to return Promise; with this bug the promise resolves to a nested Promise, no SnapshotError retry occurs, and the VM exits with status 1. Fix: unwrap or properly handle the Promise, e.g. resolve(this.exited instanceof Promise ? await this.exited : this.exited) or ensure this.exited is a number.
  • src/snapshot.ts: EDGE CASE: If the snapshot's heap was larger than the current VM's heap, mem.sizes and mem.free restored from the snapshot describe the original heap range, but the allocator may not properly track allocations beyond the initialized buffer range. Allocations could fail once the original limit is reached even though mem.buf was enlarged.

On the two "other notes" in the review of 0756dcd: both repeat findings already answered on their threads, and the bot agreed in both places. resolve(this.exited) adopts the inner promise, so run() settles with the exit code, and a failed restore rejects before start runs (thread). A larger restored native memory buffer only adds free space above the bump pointer top (thread).
