Run 911 more OpenJDK tests in CI, in up to eight shards balanced by run time - #36
CI ran the 2,524 OpenJDK tests in test/jtreg/passing.txt, split into at most 4 shards by taking every 4th test. This adds 911 tests and changes how they are split.
More tests. A run of 10 core directories (java/lang, java/util, java/io, java/nio, java/net, java/time, java/text, java/math, java/security, javax/crypto) found 943 tests that pass on java-web but were never listed. Each was run twice more. The 911 added here passed all three times, each in under 100 s on a GitHub-hosted runner. Left out:
15 that timed out at 120 s both times;
2 that did not give the same result each run (java/nio/channels/Channels/TransferTo2.java, java/lang/invoke/LFCaching/LFMultiThreadCachingTest.java);
15 that passed but took 100 to 180 s, too close to a third of the 600 s test timeout.
Balanced shards. Every-4th split left shards uneven: 18.3, 17.4, 11.8 and 11.5 minutes on #34's run. --shard k/n now hands out tests slowest first, each to the shard with the least time so far, by the times in the new test/jtreg/times.tsv. A test missing from it counts as the median. Every shard computes the same split, so no coordination is needed. scripts/jtreg/select.ts allows up to 8 shards (one per 400 tests), so a full run is 8 shards.
Times from CI. Each CI shard uploads the build/jtreg/times.tsv the runner already wrote, and docs/development.md shows how to merge a run's times into test/jtreg/times.tsv. This PR's first run covered all 3,435 tests, split by the sweep's rough times: every test passed, and shards took 9.3 to 16.7 minutes. Its times are now in times.tsv. With them, the split puts about 12.3 minutes of tests on each of the 8 shards.
Checks:
node scripts/jtreg/select.ts origin/master selects all 3,435 tests in 8 shards.
CI on 92ad5ee ran all 3,435 tests in 8 shards, and every one passed.
Simulating the split on those times gives 8 shards within 0.1 minutes of each other.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Tests
JTReg tests are now distributed across CI shards based on recorded runtimes, helping balance shard durations. The system can use up to eight shards.
CI retains timing data from each shard for 30 days. The list of passing JTReg tests has also been updated.
Documentation
Added guidance on shard balancing, timing data, and combining timing artifacts.
The pull request updates the JTReg passing-test list and replaces modulo-based sharding with runtime-based assignment. It raises the shard-count cap to eight, uploads per-shard timing files from CI, and documents how to refresh the timing data.

Summary
Update the JTReg passing-test inventory test/jtreg/passing.txt
The list adds and removes OpenJDK tests across I/O, core libraries, networking, NIO, security, text and time, collections, concurrency, logging, ZIP, and cryptography.
Assign tests by recorded runtime scripts/jtreg/run.ts, scripts/jtreg/select.ts
The runner assigns longer tests first to the shard with the least accumulated runtime. It uses recorded durations, estimates missing durations with the median or 1, and preserves the input test order in the result. The shard-count cap increases from four to eight.
Collect and refresh shard timing data .github/workflows/jtreg.yml, docs/development.md
The CI run uploads each shard’s times.tsv artifact, including when the job fails, and ignores a missing file. The documentation describes shard options and how to download and combine timing artifacts.
Project516/java-web#42: The pull request adds JTReg tests and updates CI sharding, which supports part of the broader verification scope described in the issue.
Possibly related PRs
Project516/java-web#12: This PR changes the shard assignment and shard limit introduced by that PR.
Project516/java-web#14: This PR consumes the timing file generated by that PR and documents the timing artifact refresh process.
The sharding change is low risk. The documented procedure for refreshing runtime estimates can silently produce an incomplete timing file if a shard produced no artifact, which would only make shard balance worse. Add a completeness check to the documented procedure, but it need not block the merge.

The PR adds 911 OpenJDK tests and replaces the every-4th sharding with a greedy load-balancing algorithm using historical run times from test/jtreg/times.tsv. The CI workflow now uploads per-shard timing artifacts for refreshing the time data. A parsing bug in the new sharding code can propagate NaN from a malformed times.tsv line and break load balancing.

The PR adds 911 OpenJDK tests to CI and replaces the every-4th sharding with a greedy balanced split using per-test run times from test/jtreg/times.tsv. Each CI shard now uploads its times.tsv artifact for later merging. The max shard count increases from 4 to 8. All 3,435 tests pass in 8 shards with balanced run times (~12.3 min each).
