Summary

Align shutdown stream failures and unraisable exception reporting with CPython 3.15, using one shared fallible writer instead of separate default-hook and VM fallback implementations.

  • Retain the selected stderr object through callbacks, preserve Python strings, and use the existing traceback formatter with that explicit file. Keep a native fallback when the formatter is unavailable, including CPython's repr/str failure handling.
  • Read standard streams and the unraisable hook directly from the sys dictionary. Preserve audit ordering and invoke an available user hook during finalization.
  • Flush after exit callbacks and before module cleanup. Report stdout failures with the shutdown-specific message, count stderr failures without reporting through the broken stream, and return status 120 for either stream failure even after a nonzero requested exit status.

The remaining test_cmd_line.test_stdout_flush_at_shutdown expected failure motivates this group. Its marker is unchanged; this PR does not claim the test passes or full shutdown parity. No Lib files or tests are edited, and no thread, GC, or signal algorithm is replaced.

Reference

Compared against CPython 3.15 commit d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc:

Validation

  • Independent source review, rustfmt, and git diff --check passed.
  • cargo clippy --locked --offline -p rustpython-vm --all-targets --features threading -- -D warnings passed.
  • cargo clippy --locked --offline -p rustpython-vm --all-targets passed with the existing no-thread Arc<BufferWrite> warning at _ctypes/base.rs:2246.
  • Normal commit hooks passed.
  • RustPython execution, runtime tests, and workspace-wide tests have not been run because the runtime safety guard has not been verified. This remains a draft for guarded runtime validation, including shutdown failures, hook callbacks, traceback import failure, and broken/custom streams.

AI assistance: OpenAI Codex (dot) assisted with implementation, CPython source comparison, and review. Model version is not exposed. Validation limits are stated above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved reporting of ignored exceptions, including when customized error output or formatting fails.
    • Improved shutdown handling of output streams: flush failures are reported more consistently, and can affect the process exit status.
    • Added safeguards for streams locked by another thread during shutdown, including a diagnostic before termination.
    • Repeated calls to input() now preserve buffered input; reentrant calls return an error rather than opening another reader.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The VM now routes unraisable exception output through a shared writer, changes standard-stream flushing and finalization status handling, and uses timed locks for I/O during shutdown. Rustyline input reuses a thread-local reader and rejects reentrant calls.

Changes: Shutdown and unraisable exception reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared unraisable reporting
crates/vm/src/exceptions.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/sys.rs, crates/vm/src/vm/mod.rs
The VM uses a shared writer for unraisable exceptions. It tries Python traceback formatting first, then uses native formatting. The VM looks up sys.unraisablehook in the module dictionary and passes Python string objects for messages.
Timed I/O locks during finalization
crates/common/src/lock/thread_mutex.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_io.rs
The mutex API adds timed lock acquisition and tests ownership, contention, and successful acquisition. During finalization, buffered I/O objects use a timed lock path; a same-thread lock attempt returns a reentrancy error, and a lock held by another thread triggers a fatal diagnostic.
Standard-stream flushing
crates/vm/src/vm/vm_object.rs
flush_std reads streams from the sys-module dictionary. Lookup or flush errors set a failure status. Stdout errors are reported as unraisable exceptions; stderr errors are not reported.
Finalization flush order and status
crates/vm/src/vm/interpreter.rs
Finalization flushes streams after exit callbacks and thread shutdown, and again after module and cross-interpreter-data cleanup. Any negative shutdown result overrides the requested exit status with 120.

Rustyline input reader reuse

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reuse the Rustyline reader
crates/vm/src/stdlib/builtins.rs
input takes a reader from a thread-local slot and restores it with a drop guard. A nested call while the reader is in use raises RuntimeError("reentrant call inside input").

Merge Risk: Low · up to 4f919

Shutdown and unraisable-exception reporting now follow CPython more closely. Some edge cases still differ: the traceback may be lost, and a custom stderr can intercept the object representation. A shutdown flush can still hang if a daemon thread holds the stream lock. Normal programs should be unaffected, so the risk is bounded.

Make the shutdown flush lock wait finalization-aware.

A daemon blocked in a stdout or stderr write holds the buffered-I/O lock. Finalization parks it on reattach, so the lock is never released. flush_std then waits without a timeout, and shutdown hangs. The base revision has the same wait in its final flush.

Add a regression test for a failed stderr flush with a requested nonzero exit status.

finalize_inner replaces a requested exit status with EXITCODE_FLUSH_FAILURE when a shutdown flush fails. No active test covers this override. The only test that asserts status 120, test_stdout_flush_at_shutdown, is marked expectedFailure and requests no exit code.

Closing sys.stderr does not trigger this path. flush_std skips any stream whose closed attribute is true, so the process exits with 7. Use a stream whose flush raises instead:

import subprocess
import sys

code = """
import sys

class FailingFlush:
    def flush(self):
        raise OSError("flush failed")

sys.stderr = FailingFlush()
sys.exit(7)
"""

assert subprocess.run([sys.executable, "-c", code]).returncode == 120

Bind file.write before calling object.repr.

The write closure looks up write after object.repr runs. A __repr__ that replaces write on the stream receives the object representation. CPython 3.15 binds the writer before repr(), so the representation goes to the original stream. Use the same order in the object branch here. The err_msg and exc_value str() calls have the same ordering and need the same change.

Flush the retained stream after successful formatter output.

When try_display_exception_to succeeds, write_unraisable returns before its final flush. The CPython formatter writes with print(..., end=""), which does not flush. A buffered replacement sys.stderr can therefore hold the diagnostic until a later flush. The removed _unraisablehook flushed on every path.

Print exc_traceback on the formatter path, not only exc_value.__traceback__.

When the Python formatter succeeds, write_unraisable returns before it reads exc_traceback. The formatter formats exc_value.__traceback__. A hook that clears that attribute and delegates the same args loses the traceback that exc_traceback still holds. Both branches should report the same traceback.

Update the formatter path in write_unraisable so it reports
unraisable.exc_traceback rather than relying on exc_value.__traceback__. Ensure
both the formatter and fallback paths preserve and display the traceback
supplied in the unraisable arguments, while keeping the existing
successful-format return behavior.

Add write_noraise to the unsupported crt_fd implementation.

threading enables shutdown_io_lock independently of host_env. On wasm32 targets other than WASI, crt_fd resolves to crt_fd_unsupported.rs, which has no write_noraise, so the call at this line can fail to compile.

Preserve the abort path and return the unsupported descriptor error from the fallback:

Share the fallible default writer, retain the selected output stream across callbacks, and keep user hooks available during finalization. Flush after exit callbacks and propagate either stream failure to exit status 120.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version not exposed
Bound shutdown I/O lock waits before issuing a callback-free fatal diagnostic. Preserve the interactive reader across input calls so queued lines are not discarded, remove the stdout flush xfail observed passing on Linux and Windows, and repair existing Element Clippy warnings.

Local validation: independent source review, rustfmt, diff check, and normal hooks. Final native compilation and runtime tests remain unrun pending verified safety setup; hosted CI must validate this repair.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model version not exposed
Pass the VM required by the updated native traceback writer and drop imports from the replaced duplicate reporting path.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model-version-unavailable
Follow the current workspace Clippy policy while preserving the identical RefCell implementation.

Assisted-by: OpenAI Codex:model-version-unavailable
Keep the threading-only regression coverage while satisfying the current tests_outside_test_module Clippy lint.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Invalidate the cached reader when the terminal changes.

If a caller changes TERM or replaces a terminal on standard input between input() calls, this slot reuses the old editor. Rustyline records terminal support when it constructs the editor and retains unread input after a successful read. A later input() can therefore use the wrong editing mode or return input buffered from the previous terminal. Track the terminal identity and relevant settings with the reader. Create a new reader when they change. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
